Astrologer : December 1985

Clint Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, 5:35 PM PST, in San Francisco. This means that he was born with his Sun in Gemini. In astrology, the sun is meant to describe the core or the essence of a person. Newspaper astrology utilizes only the Sun’s sign to provide its questionable daily forecasts. Astrologers, though, know that all the planetary elements present at the time of birth play a role in describing one’s character and personality potentials. This must certainly be the case for Clint Eastwood as his stolid attitude and reluctance to talk is atypical for Gemini. Gemini is known as an Air sign and has a great deal to do with communications. When Clint plays a role in one of his films you know it is going to be action, not words that count. However, if we look at the meaning of Gemini a bit more carefully, we may find that he does fulfill at least a couple of its basic premises.

Geminis are dualistic or changeable. Gemini is one of chameleon signs—those born under it can assume different roles. For years we have known Clint as the relatively silent hero of action films. His acting and his films received little critical support in spite of great public popularity. Now, in his mid-fifties, Clint Eastwood is being recognized as a leading filmmaker, the rare star who can direct his own work successfully.

The quiet confidence that marks his personality is indicated by at least two other points on his chart. His Moon, planet of emotions, in grand Leo, may allow him the sense of importance and dignity that he portrays in his film roles. It is an indicator of confidence and of someone with the self-image of a star. The other, even more telling, indicator is his Ascendant is Scorpio. The Ascendant, also called the Rising Sign, is that sign of the Zodiac that is rising in the east at the moment of birth.

Scorpio for the Rising sign in Eastwood’s chart is almost too perfect. Scorpio has a quality of quiet intensity. Silence is often associated with this sign which can express so much passion with its eyes alone. So Clint, the Scorpio rising, has to come across looking bad, looking tough and looking in control. This can be a very effective posture for one who truly is the strong, silent type.

Pride is something that comes through all Eastwood does. He may not have started his career in the finest of Hollywood productions, but his presence was such that the films worked and the power of his characters came through. This inner pride and confidence mirrors his Moon in Leo placement. Leo is the sign of pride and will. It is the sign of royalty. This means that he “feels” as if he is important. mentioned earlier, this may mean that he is used to being the center of attention. Even though his Scorpio rising would never let us imagine that he would enjoy being the center of attention. Since Leo is also associated with creativity, this placement might show his instinctive sense of creativity. The Moon is a part of the personality that works automatically. It does not require thought to act out one’s Moon. It is a direct expression of inner feelings. Those with Leo Moon often feel as if they are important. Those who have a Leo Moon and are insecure will demand that you notice them and tell them they are important. Clint can act cool about it, but he does get the attention he needs through the nature of his work and his success.

Mercury is the planet of the mind and plays a very important role in identifying how a person sees and thinks. It also will have something to do with how a person communicates. Clint Eastwood was born with his Mercury in the sign of Taurus. Taurus is patient, practical and stubborn. This is not usually a placement found in the charts of persons with off-the-wall ideas. There can be a desire to simplify, to bring facts into play and to deal with reality. The tone of most of Eastwood’s films gives us this gritty feeling of reality which he may understand so well. It would add stability to the otherwise changeable Gemini part of his personality.

Venus is the planet of love. Its placement in the horoscope can tell us a great deal about what makes a person feel worthwhile and appreciated. It will have a great deal to do with a person’s values and their relationships. Venus was in the emotionally sensitive sign of Cancer in Eastwood’s birthchart. This is not the indication of a swinger, but of a dedicated person in his relationships. Cancer is a very personal and feeling sign. Persons with Venus in this sign are not superficial about relationships. They usually have a high degree of loyalty and can be quite protective of those they care for. There can be a very high degree of sensitivity to criticism, although I don’t know that Eastwood has revealed this part of himself to the press. We might expect that the pleasures of a person with Venus in Cancer are more concerned with home and family than fame and fortune. We don’t see too many photos of Clint out on the town. He is, rather, a person who is likely to appreciate the old-fashioned values and manners of his parents’ generation. Venus in Cancer in a man’s chart could also show an attraction to very nurturing and feminine women.

Mars is the planet of action and aggression. We would have to assume that it will place an important role in Eastwood’s chart as it is the planet of macho. Appropriately enough, Mars is in its own sign of Aries in Eastwood’s chart. This means that Aries is the sign in the Zodiac in which Mars is most at home or powerful. Aries is spontaneous, direct and action oriented. Since Mars describes the way a person gets things done, we can see how this fits into Eastwood’s screen character.

The top of one’s horoscope is often associated with career. There are two indications here which support the Eastwood picture as we know it. First, the sign Leo occupies the uppermost point in his chart. This is excellent for the star, actor and hero. It is Eastwood’s role to present a heroic struggle for our entertainment and enjoyment. Secondarily, the planet Neptune is close to the top of Clint’s chart. Neptune is associated with fantasy and with film. This means that Clint Eastwood’s horoscope would not serve very well for an accountant or banker. It says that his stock and trade is imagination and fantasy. He creates a world in which the forces of good and evil are often clearly marked. It is a world not so unlike our own, except for the storyline that brings things to a conclusion.

We can’t see Clint Eastwood as the typical Gemini. He is too quiet and too physical to be the perfect Gemini. But, of course, Gemini is a trickster sign with many sides. I imagine there is a puckish and playful side to Clint that he doesn’t want to show very much of. We enjoy him anyway. He’s direct and entertaining if you don’t have an aversion to frontier justice.
