San Francisco-born on May 31, 1930, Clint played basketball, swam and lumberjacked. The Army thought he looked so fit when they drafted him in 1951, they made him an instructor in swimming and survival at Ford Ord, California. A director filming a movie at Ford Ord took one look at Clint’s tall rangy frame and suggested he could make the movies. Two months after his Army discharge Clint had a wife (whom he’d met two months before!) and a film contract. Last year, Rawhide’s producer, looking for someone to play ramrod Rowdy Yates in the TV series, took one look at Clint and decided he was Rowdy. Result: TV stardom.
